Santiago Diaz Escamilla

The Space Between Things

Diaz Escamilla describes his work, El espacio entre las cosas (The Space Between Things) as, “…both the Los Andes mountain system and the volcano Galeras, are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most geologically active areas on the planet, which concentrates the greatest number of volcanoes.  In this zone of heat concentration is where I want to carry out my project, a work which develops on three axes: A trip to the volcanoes Cumbal (Colombia), Chiles (Ecuador) and Cerro Negro (Ecuador) – assuming this journey as a container of processes, time and physical effort –; a series of writing exercises onsite, in free-form and experimental, which will be complemented with ongoing conversations with a geologist; and an installation, through which I’m interested in communicating the idea of empty space, abysm, and the distance between two points.  I’m aiming to match the geologic jargon – of tectonic plates and volcanoes, of the Sun, and the center of the Earth – with human language – of a conversation, an exchange of words – taking both into account as forms of proximity and nearness which are mediated by heat, by the common energy which circulates, as the space within things.”
